UNISHRED PRO VERSION 3

LATÆs Newest Cost-Efficient Disk Declassification Software
Targets Government Security Requirements

CUPERTINO, CALIF. -- July, 1996 -- Los Altos Technologies, Inc. today announced the release of version 3 of its popular UniShred Pro product for SCSI disk overwriting. UniShred Pro implements U.S. Government approved methods to non-destructively remove classified, sensitive or proprietary information from UNIX workstation disks.

The new UniShred Pro Version 3 is an enhanced and expanded version of UniShred Pro, which was first introduced in 1993. Version 3 takes advantage of the additional capabilities of SCSI II disks to overwrite the grown defects areas, in the event there are any.

Using UniShred Pro, defense contractors and government agencies gain enhanced productivity for classified computing operations, along with bulletproof disk declassification support.

ôThe need for quality disk declassification software is growing as the number of high-performance UNIX Department of Defense-funded programs continues to expand,ö said James A. Swanson, Los Altos Technologies president. ôAs systems are transferred from project to project, or are submitted for short term testing and reallocation, a fast, safe, non-destructive disk declassification strategy becomes increasingly important.ö

UniShred Pro is included in major programs of the U.S. Department of Defense, and is also licensed by major defense contractors and commercial enterprises dealing with sensitive data. Customers include Lockheed Martin, TRW, Northrop Grumman, Hughes, McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell, Raytheon, Boeing, Loral, GTE, Harvard University, and Motorola.

UniShred Pro Version 3 significantly reduces the threat of data compromise when computers are reassigned to different programs, departments, or people. UniShred Pro removes classified information from SCSI disks, overwriting all addressable areas, as well as defect areas. All UNIX boot files, super blocks, swap space, file system partitions, and alternate cylinders are overwritten to prevent classified information from being accessed by unauthorized personnel.

Unlike other overwrite software available today, UniShred Pro was specifically designed to meet government security requirements. UniShred Pro uses government specified procedures to remove the data, overwrite all addressable areas, and produce a written report assuring management and security authorities that the disk has been successfully overwritten in accordance with regulations.

UniShred Pro adheres to stringent government requirements for the destruction of sensitive information. Version 3 complies with the following U.S. government regulations and guidelines: Army AR-380-19, Air Force AFSSI 5100, Department of Defense DOD 5200, NISPOM, National Computer Security Center NCSC-TG-025, Navy OPNAVINST 5510, and NAVSO P-5239-26. Previous versions of UniShred Pro have been assessed by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, and accordingly are on the Navy and Air Force Assessed Products Lists (APL). UniShred Pro is also on the Defense Investigative Services (DIS) In-Use Products List.

UniShred Pro prints a report describing the disk, the overwrite operations performed, and any errors encountered. It overwrites the disk in any of several patterns specified by government regulations, or in any custom pattern specified by the user. A fast emergency overwrite mode is available when rapid data deletion is necessary. Version 3 also gives a verification-only pass to ensure the disk was successfully overwritten.

UniShred Pro Version 3 is environmentally safe. Alternatives to UniShred Pro include physical destruction of the disk and degaussing the disk, operations which are often environmentally dangerous and operationally unsound. UniShred Pro allows the user to destroy classified data on-site or in the field, reducing computer downtime and eliminating the need for the removal and transportation of disks for declassification.

ôLMSW has successfully used UniShred Pro as a disk declassification solution across multiple UNIX platforms for about three years for SECRET-level systems,ö said Liz Ortiz, computer security specialist for Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. ôUsing UniShred Pro has allowed the declassification and reallocation of disks which has saved this company well over $250,000.ö

UniShred Pro comes with a powerful, yet easy-to-use, user interface for bulletproof destruction of desired data. The same user interface is implemented across all supported platforms: Hewlett Packard HP-UX, IBM AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX, and Sun Solaris 1 and Solaris 2. Additional operating systems will be supported over the coming months.
